Blackout blinds serve a variety of useful purposes. As the term suggests the goal of blackout blinds is to block out natural light. However, blackout blinds also serve to keep out heat as well, although not as effective as purposely designed reflective blinds. For anyone that has tried to get a small child to sleep during the summer months, they will know how frustrating conventional blinds are. As pleasing as they are on the eye, conventional blinds will let in a small amout of light. This is probably of no consequence normally, but the smallest amount of light will stop a small child from getting that precious sleep. However, blackout blinds can make an enormous difference by completely shutting out the light. The same goes for people who need to sleep during the day if on shift work or unwell or just want to sleep during the day. Blackout blinds will give total darkness whatever the time of day.
Blackout blinds can also keep the heat out, which is particularly important in attics and loft rooms where the roof receives heat much longer than other rooms and as a consequence will get that much warmer.
You can get blackout blinds for most styles of blinds and also surprisingly maybe, balckout blinds do not have to be black so it is possible to get blinds that will blend in with a rooms decorations.
It's not just for sleep and temperature that blackout blinds are needed. As I'm sure everyone has experienced, watching tv on a bright day with the sun reflecting off the tv screen can be a very frustrating experience. Also, amateur photographers developing their film will need total darkness.
