Before installing blinds you must decide whether to hang the blind on the inside or outside of the window recess. Assuming the layout of the window gives you the choice. If you wish to use curtains with your blinds then you will need to hang the blind inside the window recess. This is the preferable option anyway as it gives a far neater look. However, the window recess may be too shallow for a blind, in which case you are left no choice but to fix the blind on the outside of the window recess.

You need to be aware of any subtleties when fitting the blind. For example, with roller blinds the actual width of the blind will be slightly less than the overall measurement. This allows room for the brackets to be fitted, so make sure the width of the recess is at least 40mm more than the width of the fabric. Other types of blinds usually do not need any extra width, but it always a good idea to have some tolerance as window frames can vary slightly in width over time.
