Historically, wooden blinds have been in use since the mid-point of the 18th century. A British gent is credited for creating the first set of wooden blinds that actually were first put up for sale in colonial America, in Pennsylvania. In promoting his window offerings, John Webster wrote that a wooden blind:
“moves to any position, so as to give different lights, screens from the scorching rays of the sun, draws a cool air in hot weather, draws up as a curtain, and prevents being overlooked, and is the greatest preserver of furniture of anything of the kind ever invented.”
In point of fact, Mr. Webster's keen description of his invention is apropos even now nearly 300 years later.
When considering the addition of wooden blinds to windows, the first point of contemplation needs to center on the type of wood to be utilized. While wooden blinds can be constructed of a number of different types of wood, two common varieties are ramin or basswood. Ramin is more inexpensive but basswood is of such higher quality that it is preferred for use in finer spaces.
